    Did OHS
    15x45lbs.

After each set of the back squats I feel very lightheaded, and almost feel like I am going to pass out. I think I must be breathing wrong. Interested if anyone else has this experience. I notice the same thing on multiple reps of deadlifts too.

  2. I stayed w/in my 11 Block allowance yesterday with the exception of some mixed nuts I snacked on during a meeting at work. Well, I also had some mixed nuts before my workout too… anyway, I had a delicious and filling breakfast this morning and wanted to share.

    2 Whole eggs scrambled
    1/4 Avocado
    1 Tbsp. Salsa
    2 Clementines

    2 Blocks

** You can find the clementines in a crate or box of 20 or 30 and their pretty good but really convenient and easy to peel… even better if you can find them without seeds.

  3. Mark- at times when I’m really focusing on a lift I will hold my breath, and the result is the “I’m going to pass out” feeling you’re talking about. Mine usually comes on in a rush just as I finish the last rep of a set. The best thing is to take a deep breath before each rep, hold it on the way down (this will also help keep your core stabil) and slowly let it out through the lifting phase of the squat. This of course is for lifting heavy loads, not so much for speed. It may be that your just giving it all you’ve got! Sometimes even when breathing right, a truly max load will leave me dizzy!

  4. Mark, It is common to get lightheaded and feel like you are going to pass out when you perform max lifts. It happens most when the lift is slow and heavy. The reason is because when you exceed 80% of your maximum voluntary muscle contraction while using the Valsalva Maneuver (forcefully exhaling against a closed airway) it causes an increase in blood pressure. If you are healthy and don’t have high blood pressure, then I wouldn’t worry about it much but if it lasts a long time or you start passing out after all your max lifts you might want to back off.

I agree with Danny on everything except exhaling on the concentric (lifting phase) part of the squat. He is absolutely right about how holding the breath creates a tight core and that is the reason you would not want to let it out on the concentric (lifting phase) part.

Here is a video from CrossFit.com with Mark Rippetoe on holding you breath and why you should:

  5. Breck, thanks for posting the video. I hadn’t seen that one and Rippetoe’s explanation made perfect sense. I stand corrected!

  6. Danny and Breck-
Thanks for the breathing and lifting feedback. I think I will just go ahead and pass out at the finish of my lifts. That will ensure adequate rest before the next cycle of reps. I will explain to the other folks in the gym that I am just doing Crossfit. Should get some new recruits.

Really think my problem is not breathing at the top of the lift. I have been taking a breath and holding it through the lift, but I think at the top, I forget to breathe a little, and instead I just suck in again and go. After about five reps of that, I am pretty well strangled.

I knew Victor Valsalva. Helluva guy, ’til he exploded.

  7. Mark, Breck and Danny,

This is all good information that we all should review and practice. I also find it helpful to let out a primordial yell in the middle of some of my lifts just to release tension in my life and to scare of the women crossfitters that are many reps or rounds ahead of me.

The main problem that I have had with passing out is when I enter the gym and look at the Rx’ed workout. Usually at that point I faint.

Preaching tonight at church… I will have to miss the power snatches!!! Thank God!!.

  8. Breck – I checked into the Mud run and you can count me in. They have individual entries and teams of 2 and 5. Not sure what that means except maybe so teammates can pull each other over or under the obstacles, but I don’t expect that will be an issue for the CFJ crew.

It’s on Saturday, August 23 @ 5:00 PM at Mohawk Park.

    Registration starts on Aug 18th. It’s 25.00
