That’s nuts, my knee usually says the same thing to me right around the 3rd to 4th mile..
If your just getting started on the “longer” running, you might consider giving yourself a little more recovery time, maybe every other day. Just a thought . Great job though!! : )
Oh, I might be thinking up a real leg burner w/ running for my b-day if your gonna be there!
definitely more recovery time, the longer the distance the more time off between runs. now that my runs are hitting the 12-15 mile mark, I’m taking 7-10 days off with no distance runs in between. the only other running I do is at crossfit and short speed sessions, and I find that both my endurance and speed are improving with this formula. rest up David!
Nicole- a B-day WOD sounds great! let’s see how much punishment you can dish out!
Nicole… when is your birthday? I will definitely be absent that day.
I find that rest between long runs does help with recovery. The last time I ran over three miles was 1987 and I am seeing that the recovery time is really helping. I am planning my next long run soon.
Thanks Nicole and Quadzilla. I’m gonna have to alter my new running schedule. 3 miles is a “long” run for me 😛 so my body is freaking out. My cardio was fine but my knees said no thanks. Gotta work on that. Been using some ice today but I’m still hobbling pretty good.
About the running, you could also incorporate a run/walk pattern on your longer runs. Most of the running programs at Fleet Feet use some combination of running and walking to ease the distances up. And that’s not just for beginners. Jeff Galloway, a pretty well-known marathoner and running author, advocates walk breaks for even experienced runners to minimize injury and improve times. While it’s certainly geared more towards longer runs, his philosphy is to give your body short walk breaks early in the run and prevent major fatigue in the end. He says your times will be better and you’ll feel better at the end. Even just a short walk of 15-20 seconds gives your “running” muscles a break so they’re not completely shot later on. You can read about him at http://www.jeffgalloway.com.
Of course there’s this thing called POSE that I’ve been hearing about too… 🙂
Another thing David, if your gonna start running a lot of miles, you should go and get fitted for correct running shoes. Any of the local running shops can do it, they’ll even video your stride if you want. The right shoe for your foot type is important! Even with the distances I run, put me in a pair of neutral mizunos and I’ll be wimpering like a baby from hip and knee pain in under 3 miles.
Tried to run 3 miles again this morning. I made it almost 1 before my knee gave me the big F You. Had to walk / hobble the rest of the way home.
Took me 46 minutes today.

Great stuff everyone. Luckily one of our friends owns a running shop so we’re going to go visit her this weekend to get new shoes.
I miss being able to run all over the place in converse with no issues…of course I was all of 80 lbs back then. 😀
